What is perinatology and what does it look at?

Perinatology is the branch of science that deals with all possible problems of the expectant mother and her unborn baby, takes precautions and treats them if necessary, and the experts working in Perinatology, which is a branch of Gynecology and Obstetrics, are called Perinatologist-Perinatology Specialist.

What is a high risk pregnancy?

Some situations during pregnancy, during birth and after birth put the expectant mother and her developing baby, and sometimes both, at risk due to the negativities that may occur. Pregnancies in which this dangerous process may occur are defined as risky pregnancy.

Does perinatology only care for high-risk pregnancies?

It is not possible for all pregnancies to start and end risk-free. You may not have any problems at the beginning of your pregnancy, but as the pregnancy progresses, you may encounter problems related to pregnancy and the baby. At this stage, Perinatology, which specializes in these issues, is needed to solve the relevant problem and plan the birth at the right time.

I do not have a high-risk pregnancy. Can I go to a Perinatologist for pregnancy follow-up?

Certainly. As mentioned above, having no risk factors before pregnancy does not guarantee that you will not encounter any negative situations during pregnancy.

What kind of situations in the previous pregnancy make the next pregnancy risky?

It can be divided into two: risks to the expectant mother and the baby. Any negativity experienced with the baby in the previous pregnancy (decreasing or increasing water flow, small or large baby, sudden infant death in the womb, genetic and physical defects related to the baby, premature birth, placenta previa-accreta, etc.) is a risk factor. Likewise, a condition that occurred in the expectant mother in a previous pregnancy (gestational intoxication, gestational diabetes, etc.) is a risk factor for the next pregnancy.

What conditions for the expectant mother make pregnancy risky?

Known for the expectant mother; blood pressure, sugar, thyroid, kidney, asthma problems and systemic diseases (SLE, heart problem, lung and blood diseases, etc.), being over 35 years of age, multiple pregnancy, consanguineous marriage, genetic carriers, obesity, having a myoma in the uterus, Rh incompatibility, uterine deformities, cervical insufficiency, previous cervical problems (LEEP, Conization), chronic drug use (epilepsy, psychiatric drugs, etc.)

I have had multiple miscarriages and pregnancy losses, why should I go to a Perinatologist?

The reasons that cause this situation are often related to the developing baby, sometimes to the expectant mother and father, and sometimes to problems with the uterus. Perinatology Specialist will assist in investigating possible causes and arranging treatment if necessary.

I know my pregnancy will be risky, should I not go to a Perinatologist?

We all want the mother and her baby to experience the pregnancy in a healthy way and to be in good health during the postpartum period. The duty of the Perinatology Specialist is to prevent and treat possible negativities regarding pregnancy, birth and the aftermath, and to try to ensure the union of the expectant mother and her baby under the best possible conditions. Perinatology Specialist is a physician who has knowledge and experience about many of the risk factors mentioned above and is specialized in this field. Therefore, for the least risk, your address should be Perinatology.

Should you go to a Perinatologist when you are pregnant?

In some cases, depending on the risk of your pregnancy, there may be treatments to be applied as precautions before pregnancy. For this reason, it would be beneficial to meet with a Perinatologist before getting pregnant to determine possible risks and start treatment if necessary.

Does a Perinatology Specialist follow the pregnancy and give birth?

Of course, perinatology specialists can follow your pregnancy and deliver you in the safest way. It is the duty of the Perinatology Specialist to predict and treat problems that may occur during pregnancy, birth and postpartum.

I am being followed by a Gynecologist, when should I see a Perinatologist?

Even if you have no risk, you should visit a Perinatologist at the 12th week for nuchal translucency measurement and early anomaly screening. In this week, 40% of the possible injuries in the baby can be detected. Additionally 20-22. The entire body anatomy of the developing baby is evaluated in detail by a Perinatology Specialist with a detailed ultrasound.

Why should a Perinatology Specialist perform Detailed Ultrasound?

20-22. In this evaluation made during the gestational week, some findings may be seen on ultrasound, which may or may not be important. Since the Perinatology Specialist is the one who will explain these and, if necessary, perform interventions such as Amniocentesis and cordocentesis, this ultrasound should be performed by these Specialists. Additionally, information from a Perinatology Specialist is required regarding its effects on birth and after birth. Therefore, the right address for the evaluation of the developing baby and obtaining healthy information is the Perinatology Specialist.

My baby has developmental delay and decreased fluid flow. Why should a Perinatologist perform the Doppler evaluation?

This situation is often an indication that the baby is in trouble inside the mother's womb. be
